Summer Schools in Asia

With the support of the project "Cologne Summer Schools" of Cologne University's International Office the Institute for South Asian and Southeast Asian Studies (SASOA) offers the following summer schools:

1. Every March, the summer school "Tamil: Language and Culture" will be held in Chennai (Tamil Nadu). The content of this summer school is the acquisition of the Tamil language (beginner and intermediate level, standart and colloquial language) and lectures on Tamil culture and history. Insights into Tamil culture will be given by immerstion in everyday live, and by excursions to places of cultural importance like Mamallapuram, Pondicherry and Thanjavur. Classes: Mo-Fr 9:30-11:00 a.m., 11:15-12:45 a.m., 1:00-1:45 p.m. (5 teaching-hours daily). In addition, there will be self-studies and project-work.

2. Every August or September, the summer school "Indian History and Culture" will be held in Korkkadu, Pondicherry, South India. This summer school starts on the first Monday of September and lasts four weeks. The contents of this summer school are history, religions, society, political and economic aspects of pre-modern and modern India. Accommodation will be offered in an extended house of a 3-generations Tamil family, that also organizes "Karuppan Agencies". Classes during the first three weeks: Mo-Fr 9:30-11:00 a.m., 11:15-12:45 a.m., 1:00-1:45 p.m. (5 teaching-hours daily). In addition, there will be self-studies and project-work. During the fourth week, there will be a 6-7 days' excursion covering historical sites of Tamil Nadu and the Tea-growing regions of Munnar in Kerala. Additionally, a crash-course in Tamil language can be offered.

Costs

Usally, the fee for every Summer School is €850. Due to the support of the project "Cologne Summer Schools", the fee for this year's Summer School "Tamil Language and Culture" (March 2023) will be reduced to €400 for students of Cologne University and partner universities (covering accomodation, food, excursions, hotels, entrance fees, classes and teaching materials).  In addition, a flight allowance of €525 will be granted. Visa have to be paid by the students themselves. Tourist visa on arrival are available. However, for India we suggest to get a tourist visa (no other type of visa!) in advance.
